Practicing Lawyers to Give Community Legal Services

Singaporeans who are considered to be among the disadvantaged and from low income families are about to receive a boost when it comes to their legal concerns. This is due to the proposal for every practicing member of the legal community to offer Community Legal Services (CLS). In fact, the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) has even invited the public as well as members of the legal fraternity to give their feedback about the said proposal.

A news release from SAL stated that “the key objective is to provide a framework for the provision of free legal services to members of the community who may face challenges in gaining access to legal services.”

The focus of the CLS, which the Law Society of Singapore’s Pro Bono Office would be administering, would primarily be on community law – which includes criminal law and those concerning the family. Legal assistance would be featured initially in four different, yet broad, areas – those are civil legal aid, criminal legal aid, and legal advisory work to be given to charities, as well as institutions, and community mediation.
