6 Teenagers and a 50-year-old Father Convicted of Manslaughter in the Death of Richard Nieuwenhuizen

A Dutch court convicted six amateur footballers and the father of one of the players of manslaughter after a volunteer linesman died.

Richard Nieuwenhuizen, 41 years old, was kicked to death while officiating his son’s junior club match. Nieuwenhuizen died from severe head injuries sustained while being ambushed and beaten by a group of teenage football players in an attack on December 2 that shocked the football mad nation.

“We’re happy with the high sentences, because the worst thing for me is that they never admitted what they did. This verdict gives us some kind of closure,” Xandra, Mr Nieuwenhuizen’s widow, said.
