A Man Serving a Sentence for 5 Murders Admits to a Sixth

A man already serving a life imprisonment sentence for five murders in Tennessee admitted to a sixth death that set him off on his killing rampage. Jacob Shaffer pleaded guilty to the murder of Sidney Wade Dempsey, 50, at a business owned by his wife’s family in Huntsville. After killing Dempsey, Shaffer then went to Tennessee where he killed his wife, her son, her father, her brother and a teenage neighbor.

Prosecutors said he initially killed the 50-year-old man to see if he had the stomach to do more killings. “He admitted he killed Sidney Dempsey to see if he had the mettle to go kill his wife and the others,” said prosecutor Jay Town. “It was a test. He was just seeing if he could do it.”
On September 18, 2009, Fayetteville, Tennessee police received a call from Shaffer who told him he had killed his wife. They found him sitting on the front porch with his 4-year-old daughter who was unharmed.
Police found his wife, Tracy Shaffer, 38; her son Devin Brooks, 16; and his friend Robert Berber, also 16. At a home right across the street they then found the lifeless bodies of Tracy’s father, Billy Hall, 57; and her brother, Chris Hall, 34.
