Crime Rate Likely to Increase due to Cash-for-Phone ATMs

Trading your old cellphone for instant cash may sound like a good idea but according to some police officers, these machines can actually increase violent crime rate.

These machines are called ecoATMs and there are more than 400 of them across the country. You just simply place your phone inside the bin and the machine will automatically scan the gadget for its market value.

“I can knock you down and steal your phone, find an ecoATM, I can get up to $300 in cash for that phone,” Lanier told us.

While many individuals find these ATMs quiet convenient, Washington police have already made six arrests relative to the use of these machines. According to Chief Lanier, exchanging your phone for cash will only encourage thieves.
