Brunei to Implement Islamic Criminal Law

Due to the criticisms it faces from other Southeast Asian countries, the government of Brunei has decided to start implementing Islamic criminal laws. The criticisms were because of the penal code that eventually will include death by stoning for adultery, sodomy, and rape cases.

The announcement by Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah was made last April 30, 2014. According to the sultan, the initial phase of the penal code will soon be put into action. This includes crimes punishable by imprisonment and fines like failure to perform Friday prayers.

A speech by the Sultan posted on the government’s website stated, “We repeat the history of Islamic law that was once practiced centuries earlier in this country. We do not expect others to accept and agree with us, but it is sufficient if they just respect us, just as we also respect them.”

The country was said to be the only Southeast Asian nation that implemented Islamic criminal laws including amputation for theft charges.
