Domestic Violence Covers One-Third of Murder Cases in 2013

Domestic violence is described as a crime that takes on different forms. It affects everyone, regardless of income, race, background, and status.

According to Sgt. Yvette Borrero of the Beaumont Police Family Violence Unit, domestic violence is responsible for 30% of all murder cases in 2013. There were 17 homicides, six of which are connected to family violence in Beaumont last year. So far, three murder-suicide cases were linked to domestic violence this year.

The city’s family violence unit has responded to almost 300 reported cases in the earlier months of 2014. Authorities believe that there are more which were unreported this year.

In addition, the Texas Department of Public Safety released a report stating that over 4,700 domestic abuse cases were filed in Jefferson County last 2012. Aside from that, Beaumont accounted for at least 3,000 then followed by Port Arthur’s 950 cases.

Texas currently ranks second in the United States in terms of the highest number of domestic violence incidents. The first place belonging to California.
