Dedication to Service

Scott has received numerous awards from the Boulder County and Colorado Bar Associations for hundreds of hours of pro bono work. In his own words, here is what Scott says about his practice and why he has chosen to represent individual clients faced with serious problems and challenging choices:

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
The idea of a society essentially governed by a set of rules we have collectively decided to live by, our laws, appealed to me. Being able to directly participate in that and help others solve their problems, I find to be exciting and rewarding.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I think the experience gained from having been on both sides, both a prosecution and defense attorney for years, is one thing that enables me to see problems from both perspectives. I have also participated as a volunteer house parent for the “Attention Homes” which was a placement program for homeless kids. The experience made me realize that there are many people that, if given an opportunity, will rise against their circumstances. I generally try to apply that knowledge in my practice and try to problem-solve by seeing the person as a whole and help integrate a solution into their circumstances.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I chose my primary area of practice because that is where I saw the greatest need. People that are facing criminal problems are seldom “bad” people; they are people that are facing a crisis. I feel I can bring them alternatives that can bring changes in their lives and bring their involvement with the criminal process to an end.

What do you like best about your career?
It gives me the opportunity to help people, to give them direction in improving their lives and in making beneficial changes.

What are your strengths and style?
I’m a people person. I’ve been told I have a good grasp on what makes people tick and my background has given me insights into understanding people’s motivations, as well as an ability to encourage people to make necessary changes in their lives so that they can progress.
